The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback
A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Discovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
